Our village of Pleshey in the Essex
countryside was once known as Plaisy. It is suspected that the
village's name was derived from the French word plaisir. This is very
probable as the village is indeed a very pleasant spot, however another
source claims that it named after the French word for enclosure, which
is also likely.
The village Pleshey is entirely
surrounded by a ditch dug by ancient Britons which is about 45 feet in
depth. The remains of an ancient castle built by Geoffrey de Mandeville
Earl of Essex are still visible
Pleshey is a typical example of a traditional
english village. It has a single main road that runs past two equally
traditional english pubs (bars to our American friends). A lot of the
buildings have history dating back to the 14th century and beyond. Even
today some of the cottages in the village still have thatched roofs.
There are many country walk, paths
and trails around Pleshey and the long distance path "The Essex Way"
passes through the village.
